the *JOY* alert: December 24

Today's JOY was a letter from Sam. We all gathered together on our bed to read it together. The boys had great big smiles on their faces (especially at the P.S.)

I just hope for his sake that he keeps journaling. What a great thing that will be for him to have. And if he lets me read it, I'll be surprised but very very happy!

Hey guys!
I wanted to write a Christmas message to you all! I hope you are having a great time together and that you have already had lots of fun moments. And merry Christmas!!! It's so crazy to think it is Christmas here! The change of scenery and temperature and way of celebrating is completely different and it just doesn't feel like usual! My family doesn't seem to celebrate Christmas much at all. I asked them what they do for Christmas and what their traditions are and all they said was that they eat tamales! J-P Gael and Gui's families are all having big parties tonight but Jé's and mine seem to have nothing! I thought there would be supper tonight with the family but they just served me my own food (I don't think I've ever eaten so much in my life, I didn't quite understand what they were asking me and ended up with a horses portion of food, 3 plates worth) and I ate alone in the dining room while the girl (14) talked to her boyfriend on the porch, the dad was in his home bar (which he is very proud of and showed it off to me right away) with a couple friends and the mom was doing who knows what! I'm still trying to figure out the whole family dynamic! I still can't get much conversation going with the mom and the girl but the dad is very very friendly and talks a lot with me and teaches me lots of expressions. He is very funny! Days are so long here! I literally feel like I've been here two weeks and it has only been two days. Its great though, it's because not a single second is wasted and there are just so many things going on! Today was a crazy day of very hard work! We made a trail in the forest using machetes and then built a bridge and then carried loads and loads of rocks and dirt down a huge and crazy hill in wheel barrows to "pave" the trail. We sweated like crazy. It is so hot here and working that hard is just so demanding but we all love it so much. I think I might finally have some big biceps after three weeks! I have so much to say but not enough time! I have been writing in my journal every day and it takes me an hour and a half to write it all down. I already have about 20 pages! I need to go now, there is a big village party in the square tonight! I love you guys very much, merry Christmas,

Love Sam

P.S. We saw a snake yesterday in a tree right over our heads when we were in the river! I thought Jack and Joel would like to know! And I made a monkey friend today as well!
