It only takes a spark...

We had two fires this week.

One was caused by one absent-minded, mush-brained mother who was preparing supper when a friend dropped by to borrow some cake pans.  I put it out with a shake of baking soda, which, thankfully, is a trick I learned recently.

The other one is believed to have been started by a train (?) and spanned a distance of 3 to 5 kilometers.  Mark came in the door last night just in time for us to sit down to supper.  He told us that we needed to go for a family walk and witness it. Supper was left on the stove (all dials turned to OFF) and out the door we went. Just yards from our little cul-de-sac and burning right along our bike path, was a substantial fire.

Just as fun and exciting as watching this happen in our neck of the woods was the fact of it bringing the neighbors together, everyone out of their homes, watching, chatting, guessing.  You can see why the recent tragic events in Boston were unifying, bonding experiences for the community.

Seemed like around 7:00 the firemen had it all under control, but there was still a fire engine filling up at the hydrant across from our house until about 7:45.

This week we are glad for baking soda and firemen!
