Last year, I was encouraged by friend, Sarah, to document the quiet,
peaceful joys of the Christmas season each day of the month.
It was a good thing for me to do.
And I decided to do it again this year.
So, even though I can't believe it is already December, here is my first...

Bedtime around here has almost always been something I look forward to.  I know, but it's not what you're thinking.  I love the moments before bedtime.  For the past almost 16 years, we've snuggled up together reading, to close out the day.  Sometimes it's the whole family.  Sometimes now, it's just the little boys and me when Sam is at a late basketball practice or out with friends.  Sometimes it's all the boys and Mark.  But it's most usually calming and beautiful.

Last night, Sam was at a University basketball game with friends from church.  Mark was gone on a retreat.  Jack, Joel, and I gathered in the living room by the tree.  We lit some candles.  Jack sprawled on the couch. I lay on the love seat  Joel sat on my stomach the whole time.  And we read The Extraordinary Education of Nicholas Benedict.  And then we prayed.

Later when I went upstairs to check on the boys, this is what I saw.  One gone far away in dreamland, and one deep in the make-believe world of Roald Dahl.
