Learning to read

Joel is in first grade.  In Quebec, that's when kids learn to read, not in Kindergarten.  Kindergarten is about learning to play together.  I like that.  It's been wonderful for all three of our boys considering that none of them really could speak French when they started Kindergarten.  Playing all day was a super way to learn French and was a perfect transition for each of them.

I've found first grade to be the most exciting year so far!  How in just a few short weeks, kids go from not really being able to decipher anything, to being able to READ!  It's so fascinating to me.

It sure is a lot of work for the parents, I've learned.  There is a good bit of review that the teacher asks of the students every weeknight.  And it all needs a parent (or a compliant older brother) to do it.  Mark helps when he's here, but for the most part, it's me who does this job.  Let's just say that first grade wears me out.

I videotaped Joel doing SOME of his work, Tuesday night.  He was silly and tired of working and it made for some interesting footage.

Here's my little goofball...
