Last Tuesday evening I took pictures a benefit auction for our Dix Mille Villages (Ten Thousand Villages) store here in the city. It was such a fun and encouraging evening.
There was a powerful and passionate speech given by Chantale (one of my favorite people in the whole world). It is Chantale and her husband, Shane, who, with another couple, started the store in Quebec City almost two years ago.
There was a presentation from Sister Sylvia, a Catholic nun who runs a cooperative in India. She explained how the coop provides for the women working in it and showed a video of how the delicate and beautiful embroidered pieces are painstakingly made.
And then there was a Chinese auction to raise money for the store so it can keep selling fair trade gifts which in turn pays the artisans a good price for their lovely, top-quality work. The prizes auctioned off came from willing and generous donators around the city.
And it was a big success, bringing in more money than expected and challening everyone to think differently about how and where we buy.
It was great to be a part of such a beautiful cause.
